Tu Youyou is a Chinese pharmaceutical chemist whose groundbreaking discovery of artemisinin revolutionized the treatment of malaria and has saved millions of lives worldwide. Tu worked during a time of limited resources and knowledge on the disease; she used information from traditional Chinese medicine and modern research methods. This led to the isolation of the life-saving compound, artemisinin, from sweet wormwood. Her dedication and perseverance led to her receiving the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2015. Tu’s work stands as an example of how scientific innovation and cultural knowledge can intersect to address health challenges around the world.
This artwork reflects Tu Youyou’s determination and brilliance. The colour palette is inspired by earthy tones, like the green and brown, to symbolize the medicinal plant sweet wormwood and the importance of traditional medicine. In the background, there is a pattern of the chemical compound of artemisinin. This is the revolutionary discovery that has saved millions of lives from malaria worldwide. The composition centers on Tu. Her composure conveying patience and curiosity. Surrounding elements of plant forms and molecular structures visually narrate her journey from herbal research to pharmaceutical breakthroughs.
Choosing Tu Youyou as the subject is a tribute to perseverance and the pursuit of knowledge. Malaria is a life-threatening disease that has killed millions. But with Tu’s discovery, many people, especially those from impoverished areas, can live out in peace. Tu’s story challenges the notion of where innovation originates, showing the importance of traditional knowledge in modern society. Through this Inkspot, I seek to honour not only Tu’s scientific achievement but also her creativity, commitment, and interdisciplinary thinking.
